1. ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ±ØÐõ À¢üº¢Â¢ý¨Á¡? ( As a matter of fact, I don't think the majority of them took any writing excersises in English either.  How then are they able to express themselves fluently and easily in English than in Tamil?)

2. «ýÈ¡¼ Åú쨸¢ø ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ±Ø¾§ÅñÊ «Åº¢ÂÁ¢øÄ¡¾¾¡Ä¡? (In everyday work many are expected to write some reportî, or documentation, or instructions. However, even in Tamil Nadu it is done in English (things like the annual report, perfomrance report, recommendations)

3. ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ±Ø¾§ÅñÎõ ±ýÈ Å¢ÕôÀÁ¢øÄ¡¾¾¡Ä¡? (not that they want to write creative articles in English)

4. ÀÄÅ¢¾ Å¡ú쨸ô À¢Ãɸ¨Ç ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ÁüÈÅ÷¸û «ÇÅÇ¡Å¢ì §¸ðÊÕ󾡾ġ? (hearing someone discuss complex issues (automobile, market, design, economy, social issues, investment) discussed in Tamil by experts helps a lot in aquring mastery of the language ( leave alone discussions of politics, religion of various stripes or ancient literature or fancy talks like the ÀðÊ ÁýÈõ (where fanciful usage of the language is given more credit (not substantive
discussions)

5. ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ¨¸Â¡Ù¨Áì ̨ÈŢɡġ (granted practice makes it perfect)

6. ÀÄÅ¢¾ ¸ÕòÐ츨Çò ¦¾Ã¢Å¢ì¸ò §¾¨ÅÂ¡É ¾Á¢úî ¦º¡ü¸¨Ç ¾ý "ÁÉõ" źõ ¨Åò¾¢Ã¡¾¾¡Ä¡? (perhaps many are unfamiliar with the existence of Tamil equivalent words!)

­ñÊ Ã¡õ

1.  Tamil keyboarding skills - In English, you can see all the twenty six letters in the keyboard and even those who do not know typing, can type slowly, by looking at the keyboard. It is much more complex in Tamil and so is more demanding.

2.  Tamil keyboard standardization - I learnt a little of  Mylai - enough to type a few words - four months ago.  Then I heard that a new standard will be coming out which is neither Mylai nor Murasu Anjal. So, I basically put off my learning until the standard came into force. I notice now that the standard has been released. I need a little clarification here:  If I use the new standard and compose a message in Tamil, will it be received correctly by all the users? Is Inaiyam using the standard already?  Though I am able to view most of the Tamil postings here, some of the postings come garbled due to following a different coding scheme.

In my case, these factors played a part, I should confess, mainly because my Tamil is rusty  due to some of the other factors (2, 4, 5 and 6) that you mentioned.

 1. ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ±ØÐõ À¢üº¢Â¢ý¨Á¡? ( As a matter of fact, I don't think the majority of them took any writing excersises in English either.  How then are they able to express themselves fluently and easily in English
 than in  Tamil?)

          I think you are certainly wrong. People take enormous effort to learn English.          They remember numerous spelling rules(that it has 26 letters is exceedingly gross and vulgar distortion; one has to know numerous,
literally 1000s of combinations, to know to read, write and speak English). People don't spend not even 1/1000th the effort to learn Tamil. Tamil  in middle  class, educated urban communitiies  is just cofined to
everyday tanglish,  both spoken and reading trash magazines but virtually no
writing. Of cours there are some exceptions.

 However, even in Tamil Nadu it is done in English (things like annual  report, perfomrance report, recommendations)

 someone discuss complex issues (automobile, market, design, economy, social issues, investment) discussed in Tamil by experts helps a lot in aquiring mastery of the language ( leave alone discussions of politics, religion of various stripes or ancient literature or fancy talks like the ÀðÊ ÁýÈõ (where fanciful usage of the language is given more credit (not
substantive  discussions)

            Any complex issues can be fully discussed in tamil, but theproblem is not about the facility in Tamil, but the tendency of people. Many unfamiliar words and expressions in English are instantly accepted and used by our people (remember tha every word like ellipse, automobile, airplane aerogramm were unfamiliar at one point), but they show great
reluctance to employ or use tamil words. People in cities now don't even say «Åí¸ÙìÌô À¢ÊìÌ, «Åí¸ Å¢ÕõÒÅ¡í¸, but the 'educated' expression is «Åí¸ ¨Äì ÀñÏÅ¡í¸. «Ê¨Áô À¢½í¸û! ­¾¢ø ±ý ¯ÈÅ¢É÷¸û ÀÄÕõ «¼íÌÅ÷!
 

> 5. ¾Á¢Æ¢ø ¨¸Â¡Ù¨Áì ̨ÈŢɡġ (granted practice makes it perfect)

6. ÀÄÅ¢¾ ¸ÕòÐ츨Çò ¦¾Ã¢Å¢ì¸ò §¾¨ÅÂ¡É ¾Á¢úî ¦º¡ü¸¨Ç ¾ý "ÁÉõ" źõ
 ¨Åò¾¢Ã¡¾¾¡Ä¡? (perhaps many are unfamiliar with the existence of Tamil. equivalent words!)

                 Lack of inclination, than anything else. And this is born out of false pretensions, which later on become
dominant second nature. People are slowly switching their thinking to Tanglish and later on to just English (either poor or
Indian English). Equivalent words is not the issue. Because Tamilians are substituting English words for even
common and  well known tamil words. Thosands of examples can be given: just one example: road for ¦¾Õ . Day by day hundreds and thousands of words and expressions are dying due to this Tanglish. While it is a natural
process to lose words and gain words, if no natural counter measure are taken, we'll lose a large part of our vibrant
language.

           The views expressed show their lack of awareness and interest in Tamil. There is absolutely no doubt that there are more valuable books and articles in English than in Tamil. For that matter no language can be
compared to the wealth in English as of today. But that should actually  be a catalyst to make contributions in our mother tongue, is it not ? And hence it should actually increas  our interest and enthu for our language. Everyday there is so
much opportunity to do something in Tamil which 70 million  Tamils have not yet done. The point is do we care for our language, hilosophy and way of life ?
